In the city of El Alto, Bolivia, you can witness the psychedelic phenomenon of buildings that are abstracted over an Andean landscape, mostly represented by brick and mud houses. The cholet (denomination that combines the words "chalet" and "cholo") is a construction that starts from the neo-Andean architecture connected to the pre-Columbian roots by the forms and symbols that are presented as a reconstruction of indigenous identities of the region. Thus, its owners belong to the Aymara bourgeoisie who migrated from the countryside, achieved success in trade and now have economic and social power in this city located more than four thousand meters above sea level.
The images are taken from the Google Street View platform and the backgrounds of the cholets were drawn by hand in Photoshop. |
